Explorers Education Programme

SEASHOREKIDS are thrilled to be the Outreach Centre for schools in Dublin and Wicklow with the Marine Institute's EXPLORERS EDUCATION PROGRAMME.

The Explorers Education Programme offers a range of marine-themed modules for primary school students and teachers, and is fully funded by the Marine Institute. 

The Explorers Seashore Safari and Marine Projects are suitable to students from 4th – 6th class, however, the Explorers Oceans Champion Project can also include younger classes.

**2024 - 2025 Workshop Programme**

- Explorers Seashore Safari (4th - 6th class students) This workshop is divided into two parts: Part 1 is an introduction to Ireland's marine ecology and will focus on the upcoming field trip. This workshop is delivered as a presentation with biofacts for the students to handle. It is conducted in the class room and takes approx 1.5 hrs. Part 2 is the field trip, where we will visit your local beach. The students will explore the biodiversity on the shore. They will be provided with buckets, nets, spades, sieves, scavenger hunt sheets, identification guides, etc. This takes approx 1.5 hrs.

- Explorers Marine Project (4th - 6th class students)                                        Schools choose from the list of Project below. These workshops are conducted in the classroom and are divided into two parts: Part 1 is an interactive workshop introducing the students to the chosen topic. Students will then be asked to create a project over the following 2 weeks. In Part 2 the students will present their projects to the class and follow this up with some fun activities on the topic. All the resources will be supplied.

  • Cephalopod Science Investigation (includes a squid dissection)
  • The Good the Bad and the Ugly (the weird and wonderful creatures of the deep oceans)
  • Ireland's Sharks and Rays (learning all about these wonderful animals and identifying their egg cases, Mermaids Purses)
  • Turtle Talk (all about sea turtles worldwide and those that visit our waters)
  • Life in our oceans (a general introduction to the flora and fauna in our seas)

- Explorers Healthy Ocean School Project (this project can include students from other classes and must involve 100 students in total)                                                  The Explorers Healthy Ocean School Project provides, teachers, students and their school an opportunity to become ocean literate, marine leaders, and engaged in their community as active citizens.

The School Project creates a mutual learning experience for teachers and their students, where they can develop their competencies and skills. The project also enables schools to gain recognition for their students achievements where they get to work across varied disciplines to solve challenging problems.

By completing a Healthy Ocean School Project, you may like to submit your project for an Explorers Ocean Champions Award or Certificate.
